Dear Friends,
Many Christians have heard of the Scripture in Matthew 16:19 where Jesus tells his disciples that
He is giving us the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever we bind on earth will be bound in
heaven and whatever we lose on earth will have been loosed in heaven. Unfortunately, it does not
seem that many of the followers in Christ understand and believe the authority we have in our
identity as children of God as a result of what Christ has done for us on the cross. Even fewer of
us understand how to apply this teaching.
I have struggled with the meaning and application myself. I have usually thought of binding the
evil spirits tormenting people and loosing on them the love, joy and peace of heaven. This seems
consistent with the language and teaching of the passage. The Amplified Bible states that whatever
you bind on earth, ie forbid, declare to be improper, and unlawful, will have already been bound
in heaven. So, when we declare that the fear, anxiety, guilt, shame or whatever kind of negativity
plaguing someone is bound that it will be bound in heaven. And whatever we lose on earth, i.e.
permit, declare lawful, will be have already been loosed in heaven. We have the authority to lose
or release the joy, goodness, grace, love and peace of God over someone on earth.
However, recently I have been praying for some friends and family that have been bound for a
long time with mental, emotional and spiritual oppression. They have been living for so long with
fear, anxiety, depression etc. that they view everything thru a lens of negativity and
hopelessness. It seems like they first need to have this loosed from them, they need to be released,
set free so they can receive and live in the Spirit of Christ which is all love, joy and peace. Joy is
the atmosphere of Heaven and if we have been crucified with Christ and are seated in the heavenly
places with Him as Ephesians 1 tell us, we should be living in joy here on earth even when the
earthly circumstances are not to our liking.
Jesus seems to recognize this and addresses this in Luke 13 when He heals the crippled woman of
a physical condition that she had been living with for 18 years. Luke 13:10 says the woman had
been crippled by a spirit for 18 years, she was bent over and could not straighten up. “When Jesus
saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your
infirmity.” Jesus then tells the synagogue leader who criticized him for healing on the Sabbath
that is it not a good thing that this woman “whom Satan has kept bound for 18 long years, be set
free on the Sabbath, from what bound her?”
It seems many people need to first be released, set free, loosed from the spirit of Satan that has
bound them before they can embrace and have the love, joy and peace of God be bound with their
spirit eternally.
Often, I feel led to lose or release from people the long-bound spirits of negativity so that they can
be freed up to embrace and receive the love of God that binds to their soul and spirit. And we then
declare that they are children of God forever by the work of Jesus and we are binding them to and
in the Kingdom of God forever and declaring it unlawful for Satan to
plague them any longer.
